Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women?
Recent research presented at The Menopause Society shows that the timing of estrogen therapy can play an important role in protecting women’s long-term health. Women who begin hormone therapy during perimenopause, typically within ten years before menopause, may have up to 60 percent lower odds of developing heart disease, breast cancer, and stroke compared to those who start after menopause or never use hormones. Starting estrogen therapy in the perimenopausal years not only helps relieve symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, and sleep disturbances but may also support cardiovascular and overall wellness. For women who begin therapy after menopause, benefits can still occur, although studies show a slightly higher risk of stroke compared to non-users. These findings highlight that earlier, individualized hormone therapy can help reduce health risks and improve quality of life, supporting women’s health through every stage of midlife and beyond.
