Viral Illnesses: Symptom Support First
Many mild acute illnesses such as colds, most sore throats, sinus congestion, and upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, and in most cases the best approach is supportive care including rest, fluids, and over-the-counter symptom relief.
Most viral symptoms improve within 7 to 10 days. If symptoms last longer than 7 to 10 days, significantly worsen, or new symptoms develop, a provider can help determine whether a bacterial infection may be present and whether antibiotics are needed.
Important Safety Information
If you are experiencing serious or potentially life-threatening symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, high fever, severe abdominal pain, uncontrolled bleeding, skin issues, or confusion, seek immediate in-person care at an emergency room. If your condition is not emergent but still requires evaluation, visit an urgent care clinic, as an in-person assessment is necessary.
